Tony Bennett\u2019s new album,\u00a0Love is Here to Say<\/em>, recorded with Diana Krall, just doesn\u2019t have it. It\u2019s not terrible, of course (it\u2019s Tony Bennett, after all), it just… doesn\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve said previously that Tony Bennett doesn\u2019t need duet partners. He doesn\u2019t. The album would be better without Diana, but still wouldn\u2019t be up to a typical Tony Bennett effort the past few years. The\u00a0<\/em>Silver Lining<\/em>, for example, recorded in 2015, is stellar. That record, as with this new one, was recorded with the Bill Charlap Trio. Those guys are the second, third, and fourth best artists on the album. Diana is number five. Can\u2019t have your second-most-featured person be the worst guy (lady) in the band. It\u2019s a shame because Diana Krall has put out so much great music over the years. This one, though, is just flat. She\u2019s not a big name anymore, not really bringing sales the way a Lady Gaga would do (another of Tony\u2019s recent duet partners). When Diana was \u201cnew\u201d she was hot. Literally. A young, good-looking lady who could sing and play standards?\u00a0That\u00a0<\/em>was something. Now? Not so much.<\/p>\n

There are a few moments on the disc, of course. I gave \u201cFascinating Rhythm\u201d more than one listen. I think the whole idea, though, works better as a one-off novelty act. Seeing those two (those five, really) \u201cfake it\u201d live would be great. If you\u2019ve got months of studio time, though… it\u2019s got to be better.<\/p>\n

Luckily for us, Tony\u2019s only 92. He\u2019ll have another record out soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
