{"id":3719,"date":"2022-07-22T07:12:11","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T03:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=3719"},"modified":"2022-07-22T07:12:11","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T03:12:11","slug":"you-learn-something-new-every-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=3719","title":{"rendered":"You learn something new every day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For years I thought the word\u00a0<em>memento<\/em> (as in, like, a souvenir) was actually\u00a0<em>mo<\/em>mento, similar to the word &#8220;moment.&#8221; It captured a moment in your life, no?<\/p>\n<p>Turns out it&#8217;s actually related to the word\u00a0<em>memory<\/em>, which in retrospect makes much more sense.<\/p>\n<p>Some online dictionaries accept &#8220;momento&#8221; as an alternate spelling, but I think only grudgingly as a sop to so many 21st century folks like me getting it wrong. My real-life paper dictionary from 1956 doesn&#8217;t even mention it.<\/p>\n<p>I have a lot of boxes at home labeled &#8220;momentos&#8221; that I now have relabeled &#8220;mementos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or is it mementoes?<\/p>\n<p>Oh crap here we go again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years I thought the word\u00a0memento (as in, like, a souvenir) was actually\u00a0momento, similar to the word &#8220;moment.&#8221; It captured a moment in your life, no?
