{"id":4939,"date":"2025-05-28T08:08:01","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T04:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=4939"},"modified":"2025-05-28T07:12:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T03:12:26","slug":"a-timeless-one-for-the-annals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=4939","title":{"rendered":"A timeless one for the annals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The most useless and overrated word in the English language is <em>please.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s polite and all, sometimes pretty, and can fool some people some of the time, sure.<\/p>\n<p>Some even call it magic.<\/p>\n<p>I never do, and like honor to Falstaff, I simply call it <em>a word<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please&#8221; never sways my opinion, nor changes my action.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would you do this for me?<\/em> is the exact same thing as\u00a0<em>Would you do this for me, please?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If I wanted to do it, and were capable of doing it, the addendum wouldn&#8217;t change anything.<\/p>\n<p>If I didn&#8217;t want to do it, or were incapable of so doing&#8230; same thing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would you move this mountain for me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would you move this mountain for me, please?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Same answer.<\/p>\n<p><em>But I said please.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See Rule #1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you&#8221; is many times a useful phrase, often coupled with the aforementioned please.<\/p>\n<p>Please and thank you could not be more dissimilar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you&#8221; is a pleasant thing to say after someone has produced for you a good or rendered you a service.<\/p>\n<p>I say it often, because why wouldn&#8217;t I? And I appreciate hearing it, because it does in fact make me more likely to produce for you a good or render you a service in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether accompanied by the word please.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The most useless and overrated word in the English language is please.
