{"id":614,"date":"2015-03-11T08:11:12","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T04:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=614"},"modified":"2015-03-11T08:11:12","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T04:11:12","slug":"much-ado-about-walmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeoconnelljr.com\/?p=614","title":{"rendered":"Much ado about Walmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Much has been made about Walmart\u2019s recent decision to raise its part-time workers\u2019 hourly wage to $10 an hour, beginning April 1<sup>st<\/sup> and continuing into 2016. To some it\u2019s as though Ebenezer Scrooge paused halfway through <i>A Christmas Carol<\/i> and said, \u201cOkay, Cratchit, whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Has Walmart gone soft? Is it caving to public pressure? Is it secretly in league with the feds to put one over on the public at large? (This one\u2019s as likely as any other.)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure the exact reason for Walmart\u2019s rationale, but I\u2019m guessing it has more to do with business than with good will, good feelings, or good public relations. Ten-dollar-an-hour employees are better than seven-dollar-an-hour employees, and perhaps this will make for lesser turnover. (And I\u2019m not discounting better PR.)<\/p>\n<p>Point is, <i>this is strictly business<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>And what do our friends on the left say? Do they say, \u201cThanks, Walmart\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Nope.<\/p>\n<p><i>It\u2019s not enough.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Have you noticed that it\u2019s never enough with these people? Make the minimum wage $20 an hour and they want $25. Make it 100 and they\u2019d want it to be 110. They have an ingrained sense that business is somehow out to get them, and that only by wise and benevolent government can we combat this evil.<\/p>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen, I have bad news.
