This one\u2019s about a week old and therefore ancient history in media years, so most of the world has already forgotten about the hubbub surrounding the University of California\u2019s system-wide policing of racist and sexist \u201cmicroagressions\u201d in writing and speech.<\/p>\n
But I haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n
The real creation of this monster actually goes back to this past January, when UC\u2019s president Janet Napolitano (remember her?) sent a letter to her deans and department chairs inviting them to attend seminars \u201cto foster informed conversation about the best way to build and nurture a productive academic climate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yup.<\/p>\n
You see, phrases such as America is a melting pot<\/i>, America is the land of opportunity<\/i>, and I believe the most qualified person should get the job<\/i>, can no longer be tolerated at that beacon of free speech, the University of California\u2019s flagship school at Berkeley or any of its subsidiaries. To be fair, these phrases aren\u2019t technically illegal<\/i>, just, you know, frowned upon because \u201cbrief, subtle verbal or non-verbal exchanges that send denigrating messages to the recipient because of his or her group membership (such as race, gender, age or socio-economic status).\u201d<\/p>\n
Non-verbal? Are you kidding m\u2014oh God, I\u2019ve said too much.<\/p>\n
So-called microaggressions, the argument goes, can lead to \u201chostile learning environment[s],\u201d which politically-correct types view as\u00a0legally actionable.<\/p>\n
Eep.<\/p>\n
But don\u2019t worry, this won\u2019t play any role in grades or tenure or hiring or firing or anything like that, because, you know\u2026 Everyone can succeed in this society, if they work hard enough.<\/p>\n
