At the risk of being shown up yet again, I’ve got a guest on today’s episode of Math and Musings.
In classic O’Connell fashion my son starts with math and, well, it ends as cat jokes. Go figure.
I don’t know where he gets it from.

Today I learned that Snickers this Halloween is going green.
Not the usual way one does such a thing these days, for it has nothing to do with protecting the environment.
The green in question is green-tinted nougat filling those candy bars to celebrate the holiday.
Amazing.
Not even Willy Wonka thought of this one.
Good job, Snickers.
Is it better to lose a heartbreaker or better to have no shot from moment one and lose by a million?
I had both experiences this weekend, each of the teams I jinxed last Friday on the podcast taking really different paths away from victory.
That would be the previously undefeated Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the previously undefeated Washington Commanders.
Pressure’s off I guess.
My beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have a marquee matchup (that’s the phrase everyone is using) tomorrow night in South Bend against the pesky Buckeyes of the Ohio State University.
TV execs are salivating.
Not every college football contest though brings millions in advertising and prestige. I recently attended a game at Cooper Field on the campus of Georgetown University where the Hoyas were taking on the Skyhawks of Stonehill College.
(Pause for effect.)
Not sure?
It’s in Massachusetts.

Recently I wrote that the only two good shows on TV were How To with John Wilson and Winning Time. Now there are none.
Even more disheartening is that both shows seem to be done done, as in, like, no more episodes ever. How To is definitely out, and Winning Time‘s Season Two finale tied up an unfortunately satisfying number of loose ends. They even did the Animal House bit at the end with so-and-so later did such-and-such for all the characters.
And thanks for that, by the way. Because none of us can check Wikipedia to see what actually happened after 1984.
The basketball season, not the book.
Thanks again.
Thirty years ago today Rudy was released in theaters. (That’s where we watched movies before we streamed them at home.)
I was 11 years old at the time, a perfect age to watch a movie about college football.
Well, not just football.
Notre Dame football.
If you want to know what my childhood was like, just watch Rudy up to the point where Rudy enrolls at Notre Dame. We’re the Ruettigers.

I’m flying solo on today’s episode of Math and Musings, making the journey from summer to fall, a.k.a. baseball to football.
I’m not exactly sure how many double-reverse hexes I’ve put on the New York Yankees so far this year, but rest assured I do talk about how terrible they are on this Friday’s episode of Math and Musings. I recorded the show Sunday morning, hours before their incredible 13th-inning victory after being no-hit for the first 10. And two days before their doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park last night.
You’re welcome?
Most of the people I encounter every day are 12 years old, and therefore have only a vague idea of what “September 11” means. That day in 2001 we were calling it “Attack on America” and we probably should have stuck with that. Just the date kind of masks what really happened.
Twenty-two years later I look back and think, well, at least it wasn’t worse. Crazy as it sounds, it could have been worse. In retrospect I got off easy. Many people lost their lives that day and many more lost loved ones. So I have to wait in line at the airport a little longer these days? I can imagine worse.
Most of all I think back and say, Thank God that didn’t turn into World War III. The previous time there was such a catastrophic event (Pearl Harbor) it led to four years of world conflict. I tip my cap to those fighting overseas the past 20-plus years, I suppose keeping hostilities from escalating and coming to our shores.
As I often find myself saying… I’m lucky.
At the risk of being upstaged, I’ve invited a guest to this week’s episode of Math and Musings. We were having so much fun we lost track of time, hence the “special guest” and “extended episode” distinction.
You’re welcome.
