Today’s math class bellringer: How many years is 500 months?
Bonus: What was the date 500 months ago?
If you can’t answer either of these questions you’ll have to repeat the first decade of this blog.

I’d been looking forward to Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm since the moment Season 11 ended fourteen months ago.
I knew it’d be good, and it was.
Here’s an example, from last night’s premiere, of why Curb is both topical and timeless: in the same episode I can get a modern-day crack about “DTM” (doing too much), then minutes later get a centuries-old Yiddish insult, “farbissiner.”
My goal today is to squeeze both of those into conversation.
A random Wednesday two weeks ago… not a flake of snow had fallen yet my son and I got the day off from school.
No questions asked.
But for a further explanation, check out today’s episode of Math and Musings.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Sopranos premiere I’m making it my mission to rewatch every single episode.
First off, why not?
And you gotta do something when it’s cold out, right?
And if someday I’m trying to remember when this occurred and all my journals have burned and that section of my autobiography has not yet been completed, I wanted it noted for the record.
Someday I’ll be asked to pinpoint the exact moment of man’s downfall and I will think of the day I purchased a Twinkie latte.
That is all.
For some ungodly reason today in Northern Virginia the high temperature will be about 70 degrees.
That’s quite a difference from last week.
If you want to hear what winter actually sounds like, check out today’s episode of Math and Musings.
With a quick look at this weekend’s “final four” of pro football, one thing stands out: the potential of a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl rematch, albeit without the brothers Harbaugh.
Was that three years ago or four years ago?
Oh wait, that was eleven years ago.
No wonder my son didn’t remember it.
Days off from school really haven’t changed much for me in 35 years… wake up, drink hot chocolate, play Nintendo.
Yeah, the actual 8-bit NES. I’ve had mine since 1989.
I was a different character in the story back then but it’s basically the same show.
I didn’t really need a third snow day this week, but I’ll take it. I’ll take it.
And if you’re home and looking for something to do, check out today’s episode of Math and Musings. My son and I open a pack of 1988 Topps baseball cards and talk about 36-year-old pieces of cardboard.
Classic.
Strictly speaking, a two-hour delay should have one-fourth the value of a full-on snow day.
But no child (or teacher) in America thinks a two-hour delay is anywhere near 25% as good as a snow day. Ten to 15 percent tops.
Yet if you offered me the choice of four two-hour delays in a row or one snow day…
I’d take the four delays.
Figure that one out.
